Boules Sports
Pétanque Pétanque is a traditional French sport that involves throwing or rolling hollow metal balls (called boules ) as close as possible to a small wooden target ball (called the cochonnet or jack ). It is typically played on a flat, gravel or dirt surface, and can be enjoyed in singles, doubles, or triples formats. The game is known for its simplicity, social nature, and accessibility, making it popular among people of all ages and skill levels. Raffa Raffa, also known as Raffa bocce or roundup, is a variant of bocce, which falls under the broader category of boules sports. It originated as a traditional Italian game but has evolved into an international competitive discipline. In Raffa, players use synthetic (resin or plastic) colored balls, typically played on a smooth, flat rectangular court made of sand, carpet, or synthetic material (around 26-28 meters long and 4-4.5 meters wide). The objective is to roll or throw your balls as close as possible to a small target ball called the pallino (or jack), while also strategically displacing opponents’ balls through “raffa” shots (hitting or spocking). Games can be played individually, in doubles, or triples, with scoring based on proximity to the pallino—teams earn points for each ball closer than the opponent’s nearest ball, usually playing to 12 or 15 points. Bocce (or Boccia) An Italian boules sport played on a flat, rectangular court. Players roll larger balls toward a smaller target ball (pallino). Bocce is popular in Europe, North America, and Australia. Lyonnaise (Sport Boules) A fast-paced French boules sport played on a long, narrow court. Players run and throw boules toward the target ball. Adaptive Boccia A Paralympic version of bocce designed for athletes with severe physical disabilities. It emphasizes precision and strategy. Bowl Volo A traditional Italian boules sport where players throw boules to land as close as possible to the pallino or hit opponents’ boules. Bowls (Lawn Bowling) A precision sport played on grass or artificial surfaces. Players roll biased balls (called bowls) toward a target ball (the jack). Popular in the UK, Australia, and Commonwealth countries. Ten Pin Bowling Ten-pin bowling is a target sport where players roll a heavy ball (typically 8–16 pounds) down a smooth, flat lane to knock over ten pins arranged in a triangular formation. The objective is to score points by knocking down as many pins as possible in a series of frames, usually ten per game. A “strike” occurs when all pins are knocked down with the first roll, while a “spare” is achieved by knocking down all remaining pins with a second roll. The maximum score in a game is 300, achieved by rolling 12 consecutive strikes.
